Capsicum Peppermint Ointment

Looking for a soothing sore muscle rub that will not only reduce inflammation but also provide symptomatic pain relief? This aromatic version of a popular hot and cold ointment is just the thing. It’s a simple salve to make – no infusing required! The capsicum powder and clove oil combo provide a powerful, stimulating and warm feeling, which is complemented by the cooling peppermint oil. Capsicum contains an active component, capsaicin, which is used in many OTC products for arthritis. Because this potent blend contains a hefty dose of herbs and oils, it’s not suitable for application over large parts of the body or for children under the age of 13. For otherwise healthy adults, it can be applied directly to inflamed joints and aching muscles for soothing relief.

You’ll need:
1/4 cup coconut oil
.15 ounce capsicum powder
20 drops peppermint oil
4 drops clove oil
optional: 1t beeswax pastilles (as pictured)

If the coconut oil is solid, warm slightly until it is creamy. If you prefer a thicker ointment, add the beeswax, heat until melted, then proceed. (This extra step is recommended during warmer months.) Mix in the herbs and oils, combining thoroughly to ensure proper dilution. Scoop into a sterile 2 ounce tin or glass jar. Label with instructions to keep out of reach of children and to apply only to affected areas – no more than 1/4-1/2 a teaspoon per application to an otherwise healthy adult. Do not use during pregnancy.
